5 ways to plan an eco-friendly home move

Author: Sangram Sawant

When planning a home move, you’d be surprised at how much wastage it leads to. It also results in a lot of pollution.

If you’re someone who cares about the environment, you would definitely want to make your home move as eco-friendly as possible.

You’d be surprised to know that planning an environment friendly move is actually very cost-effective and, in fact, cheaper than a regular move.

Would you like to keep a check on your carbon footprint when relocating to a new home?

Here are 5 simple ways to do it.

  1. Donate what you don’t need
  2. Before you start packing, make a list of all the things you wish to carry with you. Once you know what are the things you won’t be carrying, figure out how you’ll be discarding it.

Donate the things that are in a good condition. Recycle whatever you can. And find a way to reuse whatever is left.

The important thing is to leave as little wastage as possible.

  3. Don’t waste food
  4. One of the most common thing that gets wasted during a relocation is food. Since you can’t carry a lot of perishable food items with you, the easiest way to get rid of it is to throw it away. But with a little planning, you can prevent this.

Make a list of all the food items you have left. Depending on how much you have, stop buying new fruits, vegetables and breads a few weeks before the move. Make a meal plan that uses up the things you already have.

If there’s still something left, give it to someone needy.

  5. Re-use containers
  6. Before you go out to buy cartons and packing material, check if you already have some.

When packing the boxes, don’t use plastic and polystyrene unless absolutely necessary.

If you’ve hired professional movers and packers, share your concerns with them and ask them to use the packing material you already have.

  7. Don’t make multiple trips
  8. Be extra careful about this, especially if you’re moving short distance. Because it is so convenient to make multiple trips, people end up doing it more often than necessary. But do you know how much pollution this leads to?

By making multiple to and fro trips, you are not only buying a lot of fuel, but also contributing to air and noise pollution.

Avoid making frequent trips to your new house to carry small items. Instead, focus on packing and shipping all your household items with the movers on the final moving day.

  9. Use environment friendly appliances at your new home
  10. When setting up your new home, buy appliances and decorative articles that are environment friendly. Avoid plastic boxes and furniture. Replace them with a material that’s recyclable or long lasting.

A smarter way to make your home truly environment friendly is to rent furniture instead of buying new furniture. This way, you won’t be stuck with something forever. You can easily exchange or return the furniture when you no longer need it, or think it isn’t trendy anymore.

You can also reduce wastage by storing things you don’t need immediately at a home storage space. This way, you won’t need to buy new things when you need it again.

Also make sure you have a lot of plants at your new home. This will not only make your new home feel fresh, but will also contribute to the environment.

To execute an eco-friendly move, reduce-recycle-reuse is the way to go.
